In 2013- nearly 5 years ago- I wrote a blog post About how the group called “Al -Harti suspicion on Wikipedia” was not very good in communicating with people who believe in supernatural or supernatural ideas. I suggested that if they tried to communicate better, and they found the common denominators with the people they criticize, he will not hate them to edit Wikipedia articles. I was naive, because I thought that all skeptical activists – in their hearts – are vibrant to help people. However, what I realize now is that people who many activists want to help themselves are often.
I recently made a decision not to attend or talk about skeptical events often as I do because I frankly believe that the movement has a toxic element for it. There are events, activists, local groups and people who do great things, but their work is shaded with bad things. Sorry, comrades, but it is the truth. Very sad.
I had this awareness while watching A recent video clip from Rebecca Watson About Buzzfeed article on Lawrence Crawrus and his inappropriate (alleged) behavior towards women (What you can read here.) In the video, Rebecca says, “… over the past ten years, it has become less interested and less interested in talking about sexual discrimination in these (atheist, skeptical) societies because I feel I said everything I need to say. Nothing will change at all, and talk about me constantly.
Rebecca right. Nothing will be changed at all because organized doubts have many major problems that you will fail effectively:
- The movement often allows the inaccurate people to be high to the power sites that can be almost unlawful when it comes to criticism
- The skeptical movement has its fair share of frightening men who do not know how to act appropriately around others.
- The skeptical movement is full of the type of people who support these bad guys.
- The skeptical movement is exposed to the echoes in which specific versions of the truth are created through which any information that contradicts it is dropped, and sometimes, until it is subject to control.
This last point is the reason that I started this article by mentioning the suspicions of guerrilla warfare on Wikipedia-masters of self-appointed information in Wikipedia who work from within a private internet forum and they seem to focus on two things:
- Work comprehensively to edit super/super -related articles
- Work comprehensively to free Wikipedia features for skeptical celebrities, including people who are terrible and criminals.
In my opinion, their brand of doubt is not a good type. Recently, the investigation center (CFI) I appointed the head of the “Doubt of the Guardian War” group, Susan Girby, as a colleague Who shocked me for several reasons. First, because I do not think GERBIC and its team of editors are good heroes for skeptical movement. Second, when Dr. Karen Stolzlo talked about her experiences in harassment by a CFI colleague, Ibn Girby wore a shirt that he was in the accused “team”, to a lecture that Stollzino was in an event. Second, it was Girby The picture added to Wikipedia in Harrett Hall, wearing an anti -curvet And complete.
Personally, I think this is a potential behavior of the division that should be unwanted in the movement of rationalization. However, it has become clear that skeptical movement is not always such a movement, and regardless of the number of people trying to make it comprehensive and try to improve it, nothing will change at all.
What I have come to in recent years is that people who also call themselves skeptics are not as they might think, and they cannot discover fallacies in their thinking. This is particularly the case when their heroes are asked or criticized, as it became very clear in recent days after the Buzzfeed article on the accusations of sexual assault against Lawrence Crawn.
I have passed by watching appropriate women, and rational women are a victim of skeptical movement to speak about the mistakes made by people in positions in this movement. I think I have enough to deal with people who know about accusations and do nothing to solve problems when they are good, and I had filling fatwas, groups, and dogs.
I use suspicions and rationality open to investigate and write about extraordinary allegations. Until there is a fundamental change, I no longer consider myself part of the skeptical movement and I will not participate in the movement’s projects. I stand with the women and men who were harassed and it is simple like that.
to update: I must make it clear here that I do not suggest that I have been responsible for the behavior of her son, and I mentioned this incident only because of the relationship between the two and the impression that gives it to the people who watch the accident. I also do not suggest that GERBIC is responsible for covering anything in particular for some people.
